What is a feminist really?
Someone who hates men?
Someone who doesn’t shave and is dressed unappealingly?
Someone who is angry all the time and thinks everything in the world is unfair?
Someone who doesn’t wear makeup?
Someone who has to organize protests against men?
These are the lines I have heard or read in the media in university from the mouth of some of my friends
And the pain is that I still hear them.
“Ugh she is a feminist”
The Merriam-Webster definition of “feminism” is:
The belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests and a feminist is a person who supports or engages in feminism.
To me, a feminist is a human being believing that women also have a voice.
Have a heart,
Have a brain,
They are not just pretty creatures on billboards and TV commercials.
They also can be whoever they desire to be.
I am lucky to have been exposed to a lot of women since childhood who showed me their strength.
Women writers, women actresses, women fashion designers, women social workers, who boosted the confidence of every human being around them.
Even though I lost my confidence all throughout my 20s, I think their voice was always resonating in my mind.
To be a feminist maybe we should just watch out for comments like:
“Look sexy in the bedroom and be a shark at work” which make feminists cringe their teeth.
No one says that to a man.
Let’s be open to feminism in any definition you like it to be.
To understand women,
Hear them,
See what they want,
What makes them really happy,
Don’t expect them to become wives and then mothers.
Don’t give them lines like
“You don’t know, you are not a mother”
Believe it or not, one of my close friends became a mother to avoid hearing this comment.
Feminism is hidden in these lines
We should all be more cautious
I can hear you saying, “again being cautious?”
Yes, we need to.
We need to practice till it becomes the norm that:
No woman should feel the pressure of getting married,
No woman should feel the pressure of becoming a mother,
We should just feel the pressure to be a decent member of society, to the best of our abilities.
And don’t forget,
